Ulster head coach Richie Murphy has expressed his "bitter disappointment" after his side missed a crucial chance to secure a top-eight finish in the United Rugby Championship (URC), leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.
In a dramatic 26-22 defeat to Glasgow Warriors—who clinched the league's top spot—Ulster saw their path to the playoffs and Champions Cup qualification slip out of their control. Currently sitting eighth in the table, the Irish side now face an anxious wait as Munster need just a single point from their Saturday clash with the Lions to leapfrog them into the postseason.
"We're bitterly disappointed," Murphy admitted. "One of our targets was to make sure we were in the top eight, and in some ways, we've failed in that target."
Should Ulster miss out, they would become the first team in URC history to surpass 50 points and still fall short of the top eight—a bitter pill for a squad that has fought hard all season.
However, all is not lost. Ulster still have a golden opportunity to secure Champions Cup rugby for next season by winning the Challenge Cup final against Montpellier in Bilbao on 22 May. It's a chance to end a 20-year silverware drought and claim their first trophy since 2012.
"We've an opportunity to get back into Europe," Murphy said, shifting focus. "Our full attention will be on preparing for a cup final—the first we've been in since 2012."
The road to Bilbao hasn't been easy. Murphy has had to navigate a mounting injury list that includes key players like Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale, Angus Bell, James Hume, and Rob Herring. Captain Iain Henderson is also sidelined for the final, along with Harry Sheridan due to suspension.
"It's been massively difficult balancing the squad on two fronts with so many key men missing," Murphy explained. "But we need to park this disappointment now and move on."
For Ulster fans, the message is clear: while the URC playoff dream may be fading, a cup final triumph in Spain could define their season and secure their place among Europe's elite once again.
