The race for Sporting CP's midfield anchor Morten Hjulmand is heating up, with Manchester United reportedly positioned as a frontrunner in a brewing Premier League transfer battle. The 26-year-old Danish international, a key figure in Sporting's recent Liga Portugal triumph, appears set for a summer move, and England's top clubs are circling.

Hjulmand's situation is intriguing. While his contract holds a hefty €80 million release clause, reports suggest a "verbal agreement" exists for a more accessible €50 million (£43.5m) fee if a top club comes calling. This has opened the door for a potential scramble among the Premier League's elite.

Manchester United's interest carries a notable subplot: Hjulmand was named club captain at Sporting by none other than Ruben Amorim, before the manager's own move to Old Trafford. Amorim's familiarity with the player's qualities as a dominant 6'1" defensive midfielder adds significant weight to United's pursuit. With Casemiro's future uncertain, INEOS and the United hierarchy reportedly see Hjulmand as a potential long-term successor in the engine room.

However, the Red Devils are not alone. The report indicates that Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur are all keenly tracking the player. City's interest may be bolstered by the recent arrival of Sporting's director of football, Hugo Viana, at the Etihad. Yet, it's suggested that United and Liverpool currently lead the chase, both able to offer a promising project and a competitive wage package.

The need for midfield reinforcement at Old Trafford was underscored by a recent pre-season performance, further highlighting why a player of Hjulmand's profile is in demand. Interestingly, Hjulmand originally replaced Manuel Ugarte at Sporting when the Uruguayan joined PSG, with Amorim said to have favored the Dane. Industry sources are now touting Hjulmand as one of the most complete 'Number 6' options available, setting the stage for a major transfer saga as the window progresses.
