More to come from Swanepoel - Richardson

Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson is confident Beyers Swanepoel will build on his encouraging start for the club.

Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson has high hopes for all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel, believing the South African has only scratched the surface of his potential following an impressive debut for the Pears.

The 27-year-old’s arrival at New Road was far from straightforward. After signing a red-ball contract for 2026, his move was thrown into doubt when he left a domestic cup final early without permission from his South African club, Lions, and traveled to the UK without a No Objection Certificate (NOC). The situation was eventually resolved after Swanepoel parted ways with Lions, clearing the path for his Worcestershire career to begin.

And what a start it was. In his first match for the club, Swanepoel delivered a standout performance, taking 3-51 and 2-73 to help Worcestershire crush Kent by an innings and two runs. Richardson, speaking to BBC Hereford and Worcester, admitted the all-rounder was feeling the pressure.

“I think he was quite nervous,” Richardson said. “With everything that’s gone on and, not only that, just being in a new team as well, I thought he bowled really well. He applied himself excellently well. I think he thinks there’s a lot more to come, and I believe that would be the case. It wasn’t quite clicking for him, but what the Worcester members and supporters would have seen was someone who charges in, gives it absolutely everything. I’m really looking forward to seeing how that continues.”

Worcestershire’s victory over Kent continues their strong start to life back in Division Two after relegation last season. Following a hard-fought draw on the final day against Derbyshire in their opening match, the Pears have beaten Middlesex at Lord’s and now Kent in their first home game of the summer. They currently sit third in the table, six points behind Durham and nine adrift of leaders Lancashire, as they prepare for their next clash against Northamptonshire starting Friday.

“The performances, apart from probably the first two days at Derby, have been really good,” Richardson added. “The boys have shown a huge amount of spirit and character, which they’re going to need at times. A game of four-day cricket can be a bit of a rollercoaster.”
