The coming offseason features a down year for position-players free agents but a plethora of pitching options.

As the 2026 MLB season begins to take shape, it's never too early to look ahead. The free-agent class of 2027 is generating serious buzz, and for good reason: while position players are scarce, the pitching market is absolutely loaded. Let's break down what makes this class so intriguing.

The calendar has flipped to May, and the season is already full of surprises. The NL Central is a tight race, the Phillies and Mets are struggling, and the Athletics—yes, the A's—are leading the AL West. But as the weather heats up, baseball minds are already thinking about the cold-weather business of free agency.

This is the first of our monthly check-ins, and much will change. Injuries, breakouts, and slumps are all part of the game. For now, here's what we know about the 2027 class.

The position player market is thin. For the first time since 2015, we might not see a single hitter land a nine-figure contract. Extensions for stars like Cal Raleigh and Nico Hoerner kept top talent off the market, and the 2020 rookie class was unusually light. Jazz Chisholm Jr. or Seiya Suzuki could change that with a strong walk year, but it's far from guaranteed.

The pitching market, however, is a goldmine. Tarik Skubal leads the class at No. 1, and the depth is remarkable. Whether you need a Game 1 starter, a reliable innings-eater, or a lefty specialist, this class has it all. Velocity, control, upside—it's all on the table.

One thing to watch: the current CBA expires on Dec. 1, and a work stoppage is likely. Owners may lock out players, freezing all transactions. If history is any guide, we could see a flurry of signings right before the deadline. Stay tuned—this offseason promises to be anything but boring.
