Missouri Women's Basketball is heating up in the transfer portal, and head coach Kellie Harper is making a statement. After a quiet stretch, the Tigers have landed Arizona guard Tanyuel Welch, marking their third portal pickup this offseason—and all three come from powerhouse programs.
Welch, a 5-foot-11 guard, is expected to slide right into the starting lineup, filling the void left by Shannon Dowell's departure. Last season with the Wildcats, she started 18 games and averaged 8.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1 steal per game, shooting 46% from the field, 32% from three, and 72% from the free-throw line.
Her best stretch came in late December and early January, when she scored in double figures for six straight games. The highlight? A season-high 19 points against Texas Tech on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting, plus nine rebounds. But that wasn't even her career best—back in her sophomore year at Memphis, she dropped 21 points on three separate occasions.
Before transferring to Arizona, Welch spent three seasons at Memphis, where she averaged 10.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in her final year. She missed the 2023-24 season after tearing her ACL, but she's bounced back strong and brings valuable experience to a Mizzou roster that needs it.
Originally from Indianapolis, Welch starred at North Central High School, earning First-Team All-State honors and scoring over 1,000 career points. Now, as one of four seniors on the Tigers' roster, she brings both talent and leadership to a team that was plagued by injuries last season.
With Welch on board, Mizzou's backcourt looks solid. The only question mark remains the starting center position, but the rest of the roster is shaping up nicely. For Tigers fans, this is a welcome sight—and a sign that Harper is building something real in Columbia.
