The Minnesota Twins were hoping their recent momentum would carry into Friday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays, but the night ended with far more concern than optimism.
After dropping the series opener, the Twins learned they would be without one of their most important players for the foreseeable future. Royce Lewis, who has battled injuries throughout his career, is once again headed to the injured list.
The update came shortly after the loss. “Tough loss for the Twins followed by tough news. Royce Lewis is headed to the IL with a left knee sprain. So is Cody Laweryson with a right forearm strain,” reported Twins sideline reporter Audra Martin.
The news is especially disappointing because this has been Lewis entire challenge since being drafted. His injury occurred during Thursday’s game against the Detroit Tigers after an uncomfortable swing, and when he was not in Friday’s lineup against Toronto, concern immediately grew. Now that concern has become reality.

The timing is even more frustrating because Lewis was off to a strong start at the plate, posting a .222 batting average, .378 on-base percentage, .822 OPS, two home runs and eight RBIs through his first 12 games.
Lewis entered the season with one clear goal: stay healthy. Last year was the first time he played more than 100 games, but he struggled at the plate, posting the worst offensive numbers of his five-year career.
This season was supposed to be a reset, a chance to finally build consistency. Instead, he is back on the IL, and the setback once again interrupts any chance of establishing his groove.
The Twins selected Lewis first overall in the 2017 MLB Draft, and every time it appears he is ready to take the next step, another injury stalls his progress. This latest issue is yet another reminder of how difficult his path has been and how much uncertainty still surrounds his long-term durability.
His absence will be felt immediately. Minnesota had finally started to heat up, winning four straight games before Friday’s loss against the Blue Jays. Lewis was a key part of that stretch, providing energy, defense and timely hitting. Now the Twins will have to adjust again, hoping this latest setback is short-term and not another chapter in a pattern they have been trying to escape for years. Minnesota will likely rely on Tristan Gray to suit up at the hot corner until Lewis returns.
