The Minnesota Golden Gophers are emerging as a prime destination for a key transfer portal target, and a familiar connection could be the deciding factor.
Following a coaching change at North Carolina, where Hubert Davis was replaced by Michael Malone, guard Kobe Evans has entered the transfer portal. While the Tar Heels' coaching shuffle is notable, Minnesota's real advantage lies in its own head coach, Niko Medved.
Medved, who took over the Golden Gophers this season after leaving Colorado State, has a history with Evans. During that transition, Medved attempted to bring Evans with him to Minnesota, but the move didn't materialize. Now, with Evans back on the market after a challenging season at UNC, the Gophers have a second chance—and a significant inside track.
Evans' collegiate journey highlights his potential. After a quiet freshman year at Colorado State, he broke out as a sophomore, averaging 10.6 points and 3.1 assists while shooting an impressive 44.6% from three-point range. His lone season in Chapel Hill, however, saw those numbers dip to 4.0 points per game and a 30.5% clip from deep, a reminder that not every transfer finds an immediate fit.
For Minnesota, securing a player of Evans' caliber would be a major boost. He would bring proven scoring and playmaking ability to a backcourt looking to make noise in the Big Ten. More importantly, he would be reuniting with a coach who believes in his game, a factor that often weighs heavily in a recruit's decision. This pre-existing relationship gives the Gophers a compelling edge as they look to land a high-quality point guard who could thrive in a familiar system.
