From state championships to a national runner-up finish, Mike Fuline has built a legacy of winning at every level. Now, the man who turned Mount Union basketball into a powerhouse is taking on a new challenge at a Power Four program.
After 15 transformative seasons, Fuline is stepping down as head coach of the Purple Raiders to join Jerrod Calhoun's staff at the University of Cincinnati. The move marks the end of an era for Mount Union, where Fuline became the program's all-time winningest coach with 285 victories.
Under his leadership, Mount Union captured five Ohio Athletic Conference regular-season championships, three OAC Tournament titles, and made five appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The pinnacle came in the 2022-23 season, when the Purple Raiders advanced all the way to the national championship game, finishing as the runner-up in a thrilling tournament run.
Fuline's journey to Mount Union was paved with success on the high school hardwood. He won 95 games in six seasons at Jackson High School, leading the Polar Bears to their first OHSAA Division I state championship in 2010. Earlier in his career, he won a district championship at Rootstown and was named Ohio's Division III Co-Coach of the Year in 2004.
The move to Cincinnati also reunites Fuline with Calhoun, who has deep roots in Northeast Ohio. An East Liverpool native, Calhoun played at Cleveland State and served as an assistant coach at Walsh University. After a successful seven-year tenure as head coach at Youngstown State, he led Utah State to new heights before being hired by the Bearcats in March.
For Mount Union fans, Fuline's departure closes a golden chapter, but his impact on the program—and the countless players he coached—will be felt for years to come.
