The role of general manager in college basketball has quickly become a staple of the modern game, and the Michigan Wolverines women's program is making sure they stay ahead of the curve. Head coach Kim Barnes Arico has officially brought Sean Bair on board as both an assistant coach and the team's new general manager, signaling a major step forward for the program.

Bair arrives in Ann Arbor after a successful two-year stint at Penn State, where he made a significant impact on the Nittany Lions' frontcourt. During his time there, he worked closely with forwards and post players, helping develop All-Big Ten honoree Gracie Merkle, who led the nation in field goal percentage in the 2025-26 season. His expertise in player development and game preparation will be a welcome addition to the Wolverines' staff.

This move fills a key vacancy left by Natalie Achonwa, who held the dual assistant coach and general manager role last season before departing for an assistant position with the WNBA's Seattle Storm. With that opening, Barnes Arico turned to a familiar face who has built a reputation as a relentless recruiter and a connector in the evolving landscape of college athletics.

"I have gotten to know Sean over the last several years and his ability to connect with people has always stood out," Barnes Arico said in a statement. "He is a relentless recruiter who really cares about the student-athletes and their development. He can add a tremendous amount to our program in terms of his recruiting ability and player development."

The head coach also highlighted Bair's ability to navigate the new world of NIL and donor relations, calling him a "connector" who can help build the Michigan women's basketball brand with alumni, partners, and fans. As the college game continues to evolve, having a dedicated general manager to handle roster management, recruiting strategy, and NIL partnerships has become essential. With Bair on board, the Wolverines are positioning themselves for long-term success both on and off the court.
