LSU basketball is making serious moves this offseason, and the latest addition to the roster is Michigan State transfer guard Divine Ugochukwu. The 6-foot-3 sophomore from Sugar Land, Texas, announced his commitment to the Tigers, bringing a blend of experience and scoring punch to Baton Rouge.
Ugochukwu put up 5.1 points per game in 16.1 minutes this season for the Spartans, with a season-high 23-point outburst against Penn State back in December. Before his time in East Lansing, he started his college career at Miami, where he averaged 5.3 points per game as a freshman. That kind of steady production across two Power Five programs makes him a valuable piece for a roster in transition.
He becomes the third commitment for new head coach Will Wade since his return to LSU, joining Kentucky transfer forward Mouhamed Dioubate and international big man Marcio Santos. Wade is clearly casting a wide net, and he recently told CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein that he plans to lean heavily on the international market to build out his squad. "This year, I'm going to lean a little heavier on the international route… Those kids have a lot of experience, there's just some natural things they've learned over there that really help in college basketball and can translate to us in college basketball," Wade explained.
Wade's return to LSU is a story in itself. He led the Tigers from 2017 to 2022 before being fired amid recruiting violations, then took the reins at McNeese, where he guided the Cowboys to back-to-back Southland titles and the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win. After two seasons there, he moved to NC State, leading the Wolfpack to a 20-14 record and a First Four appearance. Now, after LSU parted ways with Matt McMahon, Wade is back in Baton Rouge, and he's wasting no time reshaping the roster with a mix of proven transfers and international talent.
