Michigan Wolverines fans, get ready—there's a new era brewing in Ann Arbor, and it all starts under center. New head coach Kyle Whittingham isn't holding back when it comes to his quarterback, Bryce Underwood, and the massive potential he sees in the young signal-caller.

Underwood, now entering his sophomore season, arrived in Ann Arbor as one of the most hyped high school prospects in recent memory. But as Whittingham candidly admitted, last fall was a trial by fire for the then-18-year-old. "True freshman, starting quarterback at not only a P4 program, but Michigan. I mean, you're under the spotlight," Whittingham said on The Blueprint podcast. The numbers told the story: 11 touchdowns against nine interceptions as the Wolverines navigated a turbulent 9-4 season, all while off-field controversy swirled around the program following the firing of former coach Sherrone Moore.

But Whittingham sees something special in his young quarterback—something that goes beyond the stat sheet. "One thing about Bryce, he's got a great work ethic," Whittingham emphasized. That work ethic has been on full display since January, with the coaching staff diving deep into film room sessions, mechanics, footwork, and read progressions. "He has made progress, still got a long ways to go, but he's on the right path," Whittingham added.

The new coach also pointed out a key factor in Underwood's development: last season, the quarterback lacked a dedicated position coach. "He was a little rough around the edges, still is a little bit," Whittingham noted, "but we're in the film room and talking him through mechanics and footwork and read progressions."

For Michigan fans looking to gear up for what promises to be a defining season, the message is clear: the Wolverines have a leader in the making, and Whittingham is committed to polishing that raw talent into something truly special. Whether Underwood reaches that superstar ceiling remains the big question—but if his coach's honest assessment is any guide, the foundation is being laid for something exciting in Ann Arbor.
