Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United is set to be resolved “pretty soon,” according to the interim boss, as reports suggest the club has already tabled a permanent offer. The Athletic claims United have proposed an initial two-year contract, with an option for an additional season, after Carrick impressed during his four-month stint in charge.
Since taking over on January 13th, the 45-year-old has overseen 15 matches, winning 10 and losing just twice. His steady hand has guided the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League and earned him a nomination for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award. In fact, no top-flight club has collected more points (33) since his appointment—a remarkable turnaround for a team that looked adrift just months ago.
Talks are reportedly progressing well, and a resolution could come before United’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on May 17th at Old Trafford. Speaking ahead of this Sunday’s fixture, Carrick remained characteristically calm about the situation, noting that clarity is “around the corner.”
“I can’t blame you for asking,” the former United midfielder said with a smile. “Two games to go, there’s not much else I can say. The situation is pretty clear for us all. The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon—we knew it was going to be towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season. Nothing has changed, there is no big swing on that. Whatever is beyond that is pretty close around the corner anyway.”
Perhaps most tellingly, Carrick spoke with pride about the work he and his coaching staff have accomplished. “It’s a unique football club, a special football club. I’m immensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, to help. As a supporter and ex-player, as a pure supporter caring about the club so much, to come back and help and move the club forward was important. To make a big step—that’s what it’s all about.”
For now, the focus remains on finishing the season strong, but the message is clear: Carrick’s future—and United’s next chapter—is just around the corner.
