Mets stand alone with worst record in baseball through 30 games: ‘We have to be better’

Every time the Mets have appeared to have taken one step forward early on this season, they respond by taking two steps back.

The New York Mets have hit a new low. After 30 games, they now stand alone with the worst record in Major League Baseball at 10-20—a stunning fall for a team that entered the season with high hopes.

Every time the Mets seem to find their footing, they stumble backward. On Tuesday, their offense finally showed signs of life with one of their best performances of the year. But Wednesday night in Washington? A complete reversal. The Nationals blew them out in the middle of a three-game series, leaving the Mets searching for answers.

David Peterson was supposed to be the stabilizer the rotation needed. Instead, he lasted just 3.2 innings, surrendering seven runs in his return to the starting role. When Sean Manaea entered with the bases loaded, things went from bad to worse—he hit the first batter he faced, then served up a grand slam that put the game out of reach. Combined, the two pitchers allowed 13 of Washington's 14 runs on five walks and 12 hits.

The offense had its chances, but outside of the locked-in Juan Soto, no one could deliver the big hit when it mattered. The result? The Mets have now dropped 16 of their last 19 games, and with the Phillies idle due to rain, New York sits alone in the cellar.

Manager Carlos Mendoza isn't making excuses. "We have to be better," he said bluntly. "It's been a long period of time where we're not playing well. We have to fix it."

For a team that spent big in the offseason, this is not the start anyone envisioned. The opening month closes Thursday, and the Mets will hand the ball to Freddy Peralta, hoping to end April on a positive note. But the bigger question looms: Can they turn this around before the season slips away entirely?

As Peterson put it, "It's easy to let things compound. But the only way we're going to get out of it is by taking things one day at a time, trying to attack, and just trying to win tomorrow's game."

For Mets fans, that tomorrow can't come soon enough.
