The basketball world is in mourning. The Memphis Grizzlies announced Tuesday that forward Brandon Clarke has passed away at the age of 29. While the team did not disclose the cause of death, the loss has sent shockwaves through the NBA community.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the Grizzlies said in a statement. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Selected as the No. 21 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Clarke quickly became a fan favorite in Memphis. Over seven seasons, he appeared in 309 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per contest. His high-energy play and relentless hustle on both ends of the floor made him a key contributor during the team’s rise to contention.
Injuries, however, derailed what had been a promising career. Clarke missed most of the 2025-26 season due to knee and calf issues, limiting him to just two appearances this year. Despite the setbacks, he remained a respected voice in the locker room and a pillar of the Memphis community.
Before his NBA career, Clarke was a standout at San Jose State before transferring to Gonzaga, where he earned first-team All-American honors in 2018-19. During that unforgettable season with the Bulldogs, he averaged 16.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.2 blocks, and 1.9 assists per game, helping lead Gonzaga to the Elite Eight. His two-way versatility and shot-blocking prowess made him one of the most exciting prospects in college basketball.
In 2022, the Grizzlies rewarded Clarke’s impact with a four-year, $50 million contract extension—a testament to his value both on and off the court. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement, calling Clarke “a beloved member of the Grizzlies organization.”
His agency, Priority Sports, shared an emotional tribute: “We are all beyond devastated. He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family. From high school to San Jose State to Gonzaga to the Grizzlies, Brandon impacted everyone who was part of his life.”
As fans and teammates grieve, Clarke’s legacy as a hardworking, humble, and beloved player will be remembered. Whether it was his thunderous dunks in a Grizzlies uniform or his infectious smile off the court, Brandon Clarke left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of watching him play.
