Melbourne football wrapped up an impressive spring camp on Friday, May 15, with a commanding 44-0 jamboree victory over Fort Pierce Westwood. The Bulldogs' offense picked up right where it left off last season, while a revamped defense introduced several new faces in a statement performance.
"I can’t really be mad about anything. We didn’t do anything too crazy. We had one silly play toward the end of the first half, but a lot of young kids grew up," said Melbourne head coach Jeff Pannucci. "Tonight we replaced seven guys on defense. We were expecting our offense to be as dominant as they were with one of the best offensive lines in the county and two of the greatest running backs in the county. It was just a flawless performance on both sides of the football."
The Bulldogs wasted no time setting the tone, scoring touchdowns on four of their first five drives to build a commanding 28-0 lead by halftime. Running back Tyrese Jefferson ignited the offense on the opening possession, capping an 80-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run. After a strip sack set Melbourne up in the red zone, quarterback CJ Hall rushed for 19 yards on two carries before sneaking into the end zone to double the lead.
The aerial attack joined the party later in the first half. Quarterback Will Reinhold connected with Jeremiah Thomas on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 5:49 remaining. Then, after a Westwood punt, CJ Hall hit EJ Hall for a 50-yard touchdown strike with just 1:58 left in the second quarter, sending the Bulldogs into the locker room with all the momentum.
Melbourne kept the pressure on in the second half, with Jefferson adding a 1-yard touchdown run on the opening drive. The tailback finished the night with 14 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown, showcasing the kind of ground-and-pound attack that makes this offense so dangerous.
"The team performance was good," CJ Hall said. "We did really good executing on both sides of the ball and team effort overall."
Hall completed 7-of-10 passes for 115 yards, one touchdown, and one interception on the night. Now entering his second season as the Bulldogs' starter, he completed 66% of his passes last year for 1,725 yards and 18 touchdowns. But he believes there's still another level to reach.
"Offense, we’re getting a little better. We were off last year," CJ said. "Our executing in practices is doing a little bit better."
With the spring game in the rearview mirror, Melbourne looks poised to carry this momentum into the fall. A dominant offense, a defense that's quickly reloading, and a team that's hungry for more—this Bulldogs squad is one to watch.
