Maryland wrestling has suffered a significant loss, as All-American standout Jaxon Smith has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. The move comes after a season disrupted by injury, leaving the Terrapins without one of their most decorated athletes for his final year of eligibility.
Smith, a three-time NCAA qualifier with a stellar 91-12 career record, is coming off an All-American campaign in 2025 where he placed sixth at 184 pounds. He was ranked No. 6 nationally by InterMat before an ankle injury in January forced him to take a medical redshirt for the 2025-26 season.
In a statement released at the time of his injury, Smith emphasized his focus on recovery. "After a lot of thought, prayer and conversations... my priority is getting back fully healthy so I can come back stronger for the 2026-27 season," he wrote. His decision to enter the portal, which opened April 1st, marks a sudden shift from the original plan for his return.
Maryland head coach Alex Clemsen had previously expressed unwavering support for Smith, calling him "the face of our program" and outlining intentions to pursue a medical waiver for his return to College Park. Clemsen acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, stating, "Losing him this year has been less than ideal... At some point though, it is not what is best for both his short-term and long-term health."
Smith's entry into the portal as a proven All-American with one year left will make him one of the most sought-after talents available. His next move will be closely watched, as a fully healthy Smith has the potential to be a national title contender and a transformative addition to any program's lineup.
