Head coach Shaka Smart rounds out his coaching staff after more than a month’s worth of searching.

After a six-week search that felt like an eternity for Marquette fans, head coach Shaka Smart has finally filled the final spot on his coaching staff. On Tuesday afternoon, the program announced the hiring of Rodney Crawford as an assistant coach, rounding out a bench that has been one player short since Nevada Smith departed to become the head coach at Siena on April 1st.

Crawford brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for defensive grit—qualities that fit perfectly into Smart's system. "Joining Marquette is truly an honor," Crawford said in the team's press release. "I've always had tremendous respect for Coach Smart and the culture he has built. The energy, toughness, and connectedness of his teams have always stood out to me."

Smart echoed that sentiment, calling Crawford a "passionate, tough, and basketball-savvy" addition. "Over his career, he's proven that he can help players elevate their games and consistently impact the defensive end with his presence and grit," Smart said.

Crawford's journey to Milwaukee is a classic coaching grind. A former player under Bob Huggins at Cincinnati (class of 2002), he began his coaching career at the Ohio high school level before earning a head coaching job at the NAIA ranks. From there, he broke into Division I as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky under Jeff Neubauer, eventually following Neubauer to Fordham, where he spent four seasons as associate head coach.

After a stint as director of player personnel at his alma mater, Cincinnati, under John Brannen, Crawford landed at South Alabama under Richie Riley. Over the past two seasons, the Jaguars have posted top-100 defensive numbers nationally—a stat that surely caught Smart's eye and signals that Marquette's defensive identity is about to get even stronger.

For fans eager to see the Golden Eagles build on last season's momentum, Crawford's arrival is a sign that Smart is assembling a staff built on toughness, experience, and a relentless defensive mindset.
