Union Berlin's rollercoaster season took another dramatic turn on Saturday, as the club secured their first point under interim coach Marie-Louise Eta in stunning fashion. Trailing 1-0 to Köln with just 20 minutes remaining, the hosts roared back with two late goals, all but securing their Bundesliga safety in a match that had fans on the edge of their seats.

"The lads gave their all on the pitch," said Eta, who has been making headlines as a trailblazer in German football. "When we scored the equalizer, the stadium came alive. That unleashed so much energy. The belief was there the whole time."

The 34-year-old coach made five changes from the disappointing 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig on matchday 31, including a bold decision to start Stanley Nsoki over regular starter Leopold Querfeld. When asked about the switch, Eta explained: "He'd been performing well in training and was in contention. That's why he started the game."

While that gamble didn't immediately pay off, Eta's substitutions proved masterful. The introductions of Christopher Trimmel and Livan Burcu off the bench completely shifted the momentum in the final stages. Burcu, a Turkey U21 international who spent last season on loan at 2. Bundesliga side Magdeburg, scored his first Bundesliga goal to seal the comeback.

"I'm delighted for him," Eta said of the young striker. "He showed he can deliver in exactly these moments. His finishing in the final third is excellent. He took control of the game and confirmed what he's shown in training."

The result means Union Berlin could avoid any relegation drama before next weekend's trip to Mainz, where they'll face former coach Urs Fischer. For that to happen, St. Pauli would need to lose to Mainz and Wolfsburg must fail to beat Freiburg on Sunday. Either way, under Eta's guidance, this Union Berlin side is showing the grit and belief that has defined the club's remarkable rise.
