Thomas Luthi believes that alarm bells will now be sounding at Ducati, after Marc Marquez failed to make a difference at COTA and can no longer hide the team’s weaknesses. Marquez, who has dominated the Circuit of the Americas with seven MotoGP wins between 2013 and 2018, wasn’t in the hunt for victory at this year’s United States Grand Prix, even without considering his long lap penalty.

The Circuit of the Americas has long been Marc Marquez's personal playground, a track where the eight-time world champion has been virtually unbeatable with seven MotoGP victories. That's why his performance at the 2026 United States Grand Prix has sent shockwaves through the paddock, with former rider Thomas Luthi suggesting serious alarm bells are now ringing at Ducati.

Marquez, even before serving a long-lap penalty for a Sprint Race incident, was never a genuine threat for the win. He ultimately clawed his way back to a fifth-place finish, but the gap to the podium—and the dominant Aprilia bikes ahead—was telling. For a rider of his caliber at his most successful circuit, simply being out of contention is a major statement.

According to Luthi, the issue runs deeper than a single off-weekend. He points to Marquez's inability to work his usual magic on the Ducati GP26 as a glaring sign of underlying problems. The weekend was dominated by Aprilia, who secured a commanding one-two finish in the main race, showcasing a clear performance advantage.

"It was clearly visible that the Aprilia turned much better," Luthi observed, highlighting how their superior cornering allowed for tighter, faster lines through COTA's technical sections. He speculates that Ducati's intense focus on developing their 2027 machine, amid major rule changes, may have caused them to underestimate how far the current package has fallen behind the competition.

Luthi's most pointed analysis suggests that Marquez's extraordinary talent has been masking the bike's weaknesses. "Perhaps Marc was able to conceal or override a lot," he noted, referencing the Spaniard's strong finishes late last season. Now, at a track where the bike's shortcomings couldn't be hidden by rider brilliance, the true competitive picture has come into sharp focus. For Ducati, the message from Texas is clear: they have a significant gap to close.
