The running community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ethiopian marathon star Yebrgual Melese, who passed away at just 36 years old. A devoted mother of two and an elite athlete at the peak of her career, Melese tragically collapsed while training for the Ottawa International Marathon in Canada.
According to the Ethiopian Athletic Federation, Melese suffered a sudden medical emergency in Addis Ababa. She was rushed to the hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, she could not be saved. The federation released a statement expressing "deep sorrow over the sudden passing of this heroic athlete," offering condolences to her family, friends, and fans.
Melese was no stranger to the winner's podium. She claimed victories at the Prague Marathon and Houston Marathon in 2015, and added the Shanghai Marathon title to her résumé in 2018. Her defining moment came at the 2018 Dubai Marathon, where she shattered the 2:20 barrier with a personal best of 2:19:36—a time that placed her among the world's elite distance runners.
After a brief hiatus from competition between 2020 and 2024, Melese made a powerful return, finishing eighth at the 2024 Berlin Marathon just seconds off her career-best. Most recently, in March 2025, she placed second at the Zurich Marató Barcelona Marathon with a stellar time of 2:20:47, proving she still had plenty of fire left in her legs.
Melese leaves behind her husband and two young children. Her legacy as a fierce competitor, a barrier-breaker, and a loving mother will continue to inspire runners around the world. As we lace up our shoes and hit the pavement, we remember Yebrgual Melese—a champion in every sense of the word.
