Giovanni Malagò is charging toward the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) after securing crucial backing from both the Coaches' Association and the Players' Association. This double endorsement marks a significant milestone in the race to replace Gabriele Gravina, who recently stepped down from the role.
The election, scheduled for June 22, is shaping up to be a head-to-head battle between Malagò and Giancarlo Abete. With the Lega Serie A already in his corner, Malagò has now added the Italian Players' Association (AIC) and the Italian Association of Coaches (AIAC) to his growing coalition. This puts him at approximately 47% of the voting bloc—a commanding position as the election approaches.
In a joint statement released to news agency ANSA, the two associations expressed their unified vision: "The players and coaches have identified Giovanni Malagò as the person capable of responding to the many challenges of the present and above all the future." The statement highlighted key areas of agreement, including Club Italia development, sustainability initiatives, reforms, and the growth of women's football—a sport that continues to gain momentum in Italy.
Malagò brings a wealth of experience to the table. As the former President of CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) and the recent organizer of the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, he has demonstrated leadership on both national and international stages. His track record in sports governance makes him a compelling candidate to steer Italian football through a delicate and important season.
The FIGC voting structure is carefully balanced: Serie A holds 18% of the vote, Serie B 6%, Lega Pro 12%, the amateur league LND 34%, the Players Association 20%, and the Coaches Association 10%. With support from three key blocs, Malagò appears to have the momentum needed to secure the presidency and guide Italian football into its next chapter.
