The Orlando Magic are wasting no time in their search for a new head coach. Team president Jeff Weltman announced Monday that the organization will immediately begin looking for Jamahl Mosley's replacement, just hours after dismissing the five-year head coach.
Mosley's tenure came to an end following a heartbreaking Game 7 loss to the top-seeded Detroit Pistons on Sunday. The Magic, who entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed, had built a commanding 3-1 series lead—only to see it slip away in stunning fashion. They became just the 14th team in NBA history to lose a series after going up 3-1.
The collapse was especially painful because Orlando was on the verge of making history. A series win would have made them just the seventh eighth seed ever to knock off a No. 1 seed, and it would have marked the franchise's first playoff series victory since 2010—a drought of 16 years. The turning point came when Franz Wagner, the team's third-leading scorer in the postseason, went down with a calf strain late in the third quarter of their Game 4 win. Without him, the Magic lost the next three games and their season ended in disappointment.
Mosley, who was hired in July 2021 after seven seasons as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, finished his Orlando tenure with a 189-221 regular-season record (.461). He guided the team to three playoff appearances in five years, but the first-round exits proved to be his undoing. In a heartfelt statement, Mosley thanked the DeVos family, the organization, and Magic fans: "All I ever wanted was to make you proud to be Magic fans, and my journey here will certainly stay with me forever."
For the Magic, the search for a new leader begins now—and the stakes couldn't be higher. With a young core that includes Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs, Orlando has the pieces to contend. The next head coach will be tasked with turning potential into postseason success.
