The Green Bay Packers are taking a closer look at a local prospect with a unique journey. Madison native Anterio Thompson, a defensive tackle from the University of Washington, is making a pre-draft visit to Lambeau Field.
Thompson's path to the NFL draft has been anything but linear. The 6-foot-3, 306-pound lineman played at four different colleges, showcasing his development and resilience. He began at Iowa Community College, earning all-conference honors on a national championship team, before brief stops at Iowa and Western Illinois, where he honed his skills as a disruptive special teams player, blocking multiple kicks.
He found his stride at Washington for his final season, posting 30 tackles and 1.5 sacks. What truly turned heads, however, was his explosive performance at his pro day. Without a combine invitation, Thompson silenced doubters by running a remarkable 4.73-second 40-yard dash and pumping out 30 reps on the bench press, demonstrating rare athleticism for his size.
Thompson's versatility is a key asset. He projects as an interior pass-rusher but possesses the length and power to potentially play end in a 3-4 scheme like Green Bay's. His proven special teams acumen only adds to his value as a potential late-round selection or priority free agent.
Reflecting on his winding collegiate career, Thompson emphasized the lessons learned. "I learned to trust the process," he said. For the Packers, evaluating a high-motor, athletic defensive lineman who has already overcome significant adversity could be a savvy move as they look to bolster their defensive front.
