The Detroit Lions are gearing up for an exciting rookie class this season, and it's not just about their seven draft picks. The team has quietly added nine undrafted free agents (UDFAs) who are ready to prove they belong in the NFL. While official deals haven't been announced by the Lions yet, several colleges have confirmed their players are headed to Detroit for OTAs later this month.

Making an NFL roster as an undrafted rookie is never easy, but the Lions have a proven track record of finding hidden gems. Since General Manager Brad Holmes took over, 18 UDFAs have gone on to play at least one regular-season game for the team. The most notable success story? Tight end Brock Wright, who signed in 2021 and has since appeared in 69 games with 35 starts. That kind of history gives these newcomers real hope.

Here's a closer look at the nine undrafted free agents joining the Lions, listed alphabetically:

Luke Altmyer, Quarterback, Illinois
2025 stats: 67.4% completion rate, 3,007 yards, 22 touchdowns, 5 interceptions
Altmyer was a four-star recruit who started his college career at Ole Miss before transferring to Illinois. Over three seasons with the Fighting Illini, he became one of the program's most accomplished quarterbacks, ranking top five in career completion percentage (64.4%), passing yards (7,607), and passing touchdowns (57). He also led Illinois to 23 wins as a starter, second only to Kurt Kittner in program history. Altmyer's experience in a pro-style offense and his knack for clutch performances—seven game-winning drives in the final minute—make him an intriguing developmental option behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater.

Jalen Brown, Defensive Back, UNLV
2025 stats: 52 tackles (5 for loss), 7 pass deflections, 4 interceptions, 3½ sacks
Brown spent most of his college career as an outside cornerback before transferring to UNLV in January 2025. There, he transitioned to a slot role and thrived, showcasing his versatility and playmaking ability. At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, Brown's quickness and instincts could make him a valuable asset in Detroit's secondary.
