This is really ominous for the rest of The W.

The New York Liberty just sent a chilling message to the rest of the WNBA—and they did it without two of their biggest stars.

On Thursday, the Liberty crushed the Portland Fire 100-82, making history as the first team in WNBA's 30-year existence to average 100 points over the first four games of a season. Their offensive rating of 120.4 is nearly seven points higher than the second-place Indiana Fever, and their plus-15.6 net rating leads the league after a week of action.

What makes this even more ominous? The Liberty are doing it shorthanded. Superstar Sabrina Ionescu is recovering from a foot injury, and marquee free-agent signing Satou Sabally has been sidelined with a cyst. First-year head coach Chris DeMarco hasn't had his full roster yet, but New York is already 3-1 and looking like the most lethal offense in league history.

Two-time MVP Breanna Stewart is leading the charge with 23.0 points per game, while rookie sensation Pauline Astier (16.8 points) and veteran sharpshooter Marine Johannes (15.8 points) have stepped up big time. And let's not forget Jonquel Jones—another former MVP—who's quietly putting up 11.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 stocks per game as the team's fourth option.

When Ionescu and Sabally eventually return, the Liberty could become unstoppable. For now, they're already making history—and sending a clear warning to the rest of the league.
