There was a big bidding war in the sneaker industry for LeBron James' services when he was a senior in high school.

When you're the most hyped basketball prospect since, well, ever, the sneaker world comes knocking. That was the reality for LeBron James back in 2003, when he was a senior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, already destined for NBA superstardom straight out of high school.

The bidding war for his endorsement was nothing short of legendary, with Nike, Adidas, and Reebok all vying for the chance to put their swoosh—or stripe, or vector—on the next big thing. We all know how that story ended: Nike won the prize just before LeBron was selected No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, signing him to a then-unprecedented $90 million deal.

But here's the twist: it almost didn't happen that way. During a recent appearance on the "New Heights" podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, James revealed that Reebok actually made the most compelling initial pitch—one that nearly swayed him entirely.

"I took on three pitches," James explained. "I did an Adidas pitch, I did a Reebok pitch, I did a Nike pitch. The best pitch that I got, where I thought I'd end up, was actually Reebok at one point."

The offer was staggering. As a high school senior, Reebok handed him a $10 million check on the spot—just to promise he wouldn't meet with any other companies. "My mom looked at me," LeBron recalled. "She said, 'Son, trust your gut. If they're offering you this, who knows what the other companies may offer you... Do what you think is right.'"

Despite the temptation, James returned the check. "I said thank you, I will definitely like to continue our conversation, but I will be remiss if I did not take those other pitches from the other companies," he said. "I may have cried on the way home."

What made Reebok's pitch so enticing? They played to his other passion: football. Knowing LeBron was a standout wide receiver in high school, they decked out their presentation with NFL jerseys, banking on his love for the gridiron. "They had the NFL as well," James noted, referring to Reebok's then-licensing deal with the league.

In the end, his gut—and his mother's advice—led him to Nike. And that initial $90 million deal? It was just the beginning. In 2015, James signed a lifetime partnership with the brand, reportedly valued at over $1 billion. According to Forbes, that deal was a cornerstone of his journey to becoming a billionaire in 2022.

It's a reminder that sometimes, the biggest plays happen off the court—and that trusting your instincts (and your mom) can lead to legendary results.
