Marquette volleyball has added a valuable piece to its roster for the upcoming 2026 season, welcoming UNC Wilmington transfer Lauren Young to the Golden Eagles family. Announced in mid-May—a time when collegiate rosters are often finalizing—this move brings a seasoned setter and opposite hitter to Milwaukee for her final year of eligibility.
Young, a 5'11" athlete with versatility at both setter and opposite hitter, brings a unique journey to Marquette. She began her collegiate career at Jacksonville University in 2022, redshirting that season before seeing action in 2023 and 2024. During her time with the Dolphins, she primarily played as a setter, recording 82 assists in 25 sets during the 2024 campaign while backing up starter Emily Hodsdon. Jacksonville finished 15-14 overall and 10-7 in ASUN play that year.
After completing her degree in just three seasons at JU, Young transferred to UNC Wilmington for the 2025 season. There, she expanded her role, playing in 69 sets across 22 matches and splitting time between outside hitter and setter. Her stat line included 1.33 kills per set and 2.20 assists per set, though her .109 hitting percentage as a part-time hitter raises some questions about offensive efficiency. Still, context matters: the Seahawks struggled to a 5-21 record overall and 4-12 in CAA play, making individual production a challenge.
For Marquette, Young projects as an insurance policy behind freshman setter Luanna Markus. Her experience and ability to play multiple positions add depth to a Golden Eagles squad that's reloading but still aiming for NCAA tournament contention. With Callie Kenny as the only other established setter on the roster, Young's arrival provides coach Ryan Theis with flexibility and veteran leadership for a one-season stint.
In her announcement, Young expressed gratitude for the opportunity to finish her college career "in a place I once called home," hinting at a deeper connection to Marquette that's sure to intrigue fans and local media alike. Whether she's setting up teammates or contributing as a hitter, her addition strengthens a program looking to build on its winning tradition.
