A dramatic, back-and-forth season finale ended in heartbreak for the Nashville Predators, as a late penalty paved the way for the Anaheim Ducks to snatch a 5-4 victory on Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.
The game was a showcase of offensive firepower, with Filip Forsberg and Steven Stamkos each netting two goals and flirting with hat tricks. The turning point, however, came with just under four minutes remaining and the score tied 4-4. A high-sticking double-minor penalty on Nashville's Tyson Jost, which drew blood from Anaheim's Troy Terry, proved fatal. The Ducks capitalized on the extended power play, with Terry burying a rebound for the game-winning goal.
Despite the bitter ending, the night was filled with memorable moments for the Predators. Rookie Cole O'Hara made his NHL debut on the top line alongside Ryan O'Reilly and Stamkos, and he recorded his first career point with a slick assist on Stamkos's first-period goal. "It was really special," O'Hara said of the experience. "Something I'll remember for a long time."
The loss overshadowed significant individual milestones. Stamkos finished his first season in Nashville with 42 goals, tying for the third-most in a single season in franchise history. Forsberg's 40 goals mark the fourth-highest total in team annals and the third time he has reached that elite plateau in his career.
Reflecting on the chaotic contest, head coach Andrew Brunette noted, "It was a fun hockey game... We competed hard. We played hard." While the final result was a disappointment, the game served as a thrilling, if frustrating, send-off to a season that saw the emergence of new talent and consistent production from its stars.
