Landon Donovan is gearing up for what promises to be an unforgettable summer—and it's not just about the game itself. The legendary former USMNT star, now 44, will be stepping into the broadcast booth to call a men's World Cup on home soil for the very first time, and he couldn't be more thrilled.
"It's really exhilarating to be in the booth," Donovan tells PEOPLE, speaking on behalf of his partnership with NESCAFÉ. "If I'm being honest, a part of me is jealous that I won't get to just watch the games."
Donovan, who competed in three World Cups before retiring in 2014, will join veteran broadcaster Ian Darke this summer. He says the opportunity to represent the soccer community and its passionate fan bases is something he takes great pride in. "When you get to watch people proud to watch their country compete, it's really special," he shares.
But the most exciting part of the World Cup for Donovan has nothing to do with the action on the pitch—it's all about family. The father of three is looking forward to sharing the experience with his wife, Hannah Bartell, and their children. "My wife and my middle child, my middle son, will go to two games on their own," Donovan explains. "My other two kids are going to summer camp, and then they will all be coming to the first U.S. game, USA versus Paraguay, in L.A. And then potentially later in the tournament, we'll meet up again. That will be by far my favorite moments."
Since marrying Hannah in 2015, Donovan has traded the soccer field for the sidelines, but he's still staying active—thanks to his three kids. "They love sports. They play soccer, flag football, baseball. They love it all," he says with a smile.
With the World Cup on the horizon, Donovan is ready to bring his signature passion and insight to the booth. Whether he's calling a game or cheering from the stands with his family, one thing is clear: this summer is going to be special.
