Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary.
During the Lakers' 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years.
Tony Smith, a 6-foot-3 guard, came to the Lakers as a second-round pick in the 1990 NBA Draft. He had just set a Marquette University record by averaging 23.8 points a game during his senior season there, and it was hoped that he would make an aging Lakers roster a little younger and more spry.
Smith never quite panned out. He spent five seasons with Los Angeles and averaged 5.8 points and 1.8 assists in 15.5 minutes a game during that time. He played for five other teams during his final four seasons in the NBA, and he also had stints in Spain, Italy and in the Continental Basketball Association.
He ended up averaging 5.5 points and 1.9 assists in 16 minutes a game during his nine years in the NBA.
