Kentucky basketball fans, get ready for some serious draft drama. Wildcats center Malachi Moreno is facing the biggest decision of his young career: return to Lexington for his sophomore season or take the leap into the 2026 NBA Draft.

When the Georgetown, Kentucky native first announced he'd test the draft waters, most assumed this was just a formality. After all, Moreno reportedly took a pay cut to stay with the Wildcats rather than enter the transfer portal. But after a breakout freshman campaign that turned heads across the league, that once-certain return is no longer a guarantee.

Let's rewind to last season. Moreno was expected to be Kentucky's third option at center, sitting behind Jayden Quaintance and Brandon Garrison. But when Quaintance played just four games all year, Moreno seized his opportunity and became one of the biggest surprises in college basketball.

The numbers tell the story: 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game, shooting an efficient 58.2% from the field. He appeared in all 36 games, started 30, and logged 22.6 minutes per contest. For a guy who was supposed to be riding the bench, that's a statement season.

So what's going through his mind now? "This is my dream, to be in the NBA, so I am looking at it with my best foot forward," Moreno told CBS Sports' Isaac Trotter. "Obviously, I left the option on the table to go back to college if I could. Right now, all this leading into the decision is just how these next couple of weeks go."

Moreno has until May 27 to make his call, and he's leaning heavily on his support system. "I will just have a lot of talks with my brother because he is probably going to be the most important factor in this decision, talks with my family, talks with my inner circle, and seeing what is the best decision for me at the time."

In a move that raised eyebrows, Moreno also opted out of scrimmages at the NBA Draft Combine. His reasoning? "After talks with my brother... my agent, they kind of just said that they thought that I was in a pretty good spot."

Translation: Moreno's draft stock is already strong enough that he doesn't need to prove anything more on the court. Now it's all about the conversations that will shape his future—and Kentucky's. Whether he's wearing blue or an NBA jersey next season, one thing's for sure: this is just the beginning for Malachi Moreno.
