The Denver Broncos won the AFC West for the first time since 2015, ending the Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s nine-year run of dominance over the division. Former Broncos safety Justin Simmons was a thorn in Kansas City’s side over the years, intercepting Mahomes six times in his career. Still, Denver struggled…

For years, the Denver Broncos and their fans had one name on their minds: Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had turned the AFC West into his personal playground, but the 2024 season marked a seismic shift. The Broncos finally reclaimed the division title for the first time since 2015, snapping a nine-year streak of Chiefs dominance. It was a moment of sweet redemption for a franchise that had endured relentless heartbreak.

No one understands that frustration better than former Broncos safety Justin Simmons. Over his career, Simmons became a rare thorn in Mahomes' side, intercepting him six times—more than any other defender. Yet, even those highlights couldn't mask the brutal reality of his record against the Chiefs. "It's crazy because my record against him is like 1-16," Simmons admitted on the DNVR Sports podcast. "Everyone's like, 'He's your kryptonite.' I'm like, 'Well, it can't be that much.'"

Now retired, Simmons hasn't softened his stance. His disdain for Kansas City runs deep, fueled by years of competitive battles and a few too many unsportsmanlike moments. "I do not like them," he said bluntly. "I don't like any part of most of their team. I got a lot of respect for the great players, but when we were losing to them, they made sure we knew it. I have full hatred for them. Wasn't going to go to the team as a free agent."

Still, Simmons acknowledges the class of the Hunt family and the genius of Andy Reid. But that doesn't mean he can't enjoy a little schadenfreude. When the Philadelphia Eagles dismantled the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, Simmons celebrated in style. "That's why when the Eagles won the Super Bowl, I poured a glass of wine," he said, savoring the moment like a vintage victory. For Broncos Country, that toast was a shared triumph—proof that even the mightiest dynasties can fall.
