The Cincinnati Bengals are wasting no time putting their rookie class to work, and early signs from minicamp suggest a clear vision for their top draft pick. After selecting edge defender Cashius Howell in the second round—a move that followed hints he was a first-round target—the coaching staff is already experimenting with his role.

Defensive coordinator Al Golden has been vocal about transitioning to a more hybrid, multiple-front defense, and Howell appears to be a key piece of that puzzle. Rather than pigeonholing him as a pure pass-rusher, Golden is testing Howell's versatility by dropping him into coverage during drills. This approach allows for creative play-calling, such as sending linebackers on blitzes or simulating pressure from different alignments.

Early footage from Friday's session, shared by CLNS Media's Mike Petraglia, shows Howell (wearing No. 55) working on the edge in coverage situations. While he won't spend the majority of his rookie season dropping back, this added dimension gives the Bengals flexibility in a crowded pass-rushing room that includes Myles Murphy, Shemar Stewart, and Boye Mafe, along with interior additions Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen.

For a team looking to maximize its defensive potential, Howell's ability to handle multiple responsibilities could be a game-changer. It's still early, but the Bengals are already showing they drafted with a plan—and they're putting it into action from Day 1.
