The New York Jets knew Fernando Mendoza was heading to the No. 1 overall pick, leaving them with a tough call: David Bailey or Arvell Reese. They chose Bailey, the more traditional edge rusher, over the hybrid linebacker Reese. Now, it turns out some college coaches think they made the right move.
According to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, multiple college coaches have backed the Jets' decision to draft Bailey. The feedback is clear: Bailey is ready to make an impact right away. "I spent a good chunk of spring visiting or talking with Big 12 coaches, and they all called Bailey one of the best pure pass rushers they've seen," Rittenberg reported. "Big Ten coaches were also complimentary of Reese, who had a breakout season in 2025, but his impact was viewed as less consistent than that of Bailey."
The Jets went with the 22-year-old Texas Tech edge rusher, who racked up 14.5 sacks last season. Bailey is seen as a safer, more traditional pick compared to Reese, whose high upside comes with a bit more uncertainty. That consistency was a major selling point for the Jets at No. 2. In a league where premium positions like edge rusher are gold, grabbing someone with elite pass-rush traits is exactly the kind of move that can transform a defense.
While Reese might be the more intriguing prospect—thanks to his breakout 2025 season at Ohio State—the Jets' defense needs immediate improvement. Bailey's steady production and polished skills could be the key to unlocking that. And with these college coaches singing his praises, it looks like New York might have landed a game-changer who's ready to hit the ground running.
