When asked about the possibility of a LeBron James statue outside the Los Angeles Lakers' arena, team owner Jeanie Buss offered a measured response that spoke volumes—without shutting the door entirely.
The question carries weight because James' Lakers legacy is entering a more complicated chapter following another early playoff exit. While his place in NBA history is unquestioned, his standing among the franchise's immortal figures still sparks debate among fans and analysts alike.
Buss didn't dismiss the idea outright. Instead, she made it clear that the Lakers have a time-honored order for these honors—and James simply isn't at that point yet.
"He is still playing. We don't talk about statues until someone retires," Buss explained. "He is playing great. The standard for having your jersey retired as a Laker is when a player is inducted into the Hall of Fame."
She added with confidence, "I have absolutely no doubt that LeBron will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame."
That answer was diplomatic, but it still said plenty. Rather than treating the statue idea as a conversation ready to happen, Buss redirected the discussion toward the Lakers' established criteria for honoring players—and that distinction matters. The franchise has never been casual about statues, jersey retirements, or permanent recognition.
James may still be performing at an elite level, but the Lakers aren't ready to discuss a statue while his career is still active.
Where Buss grew more definitive was on the topic of a retired jersey. There, she left almost no room for doubt.
"When he does so, then we will retire his jersey. Knowing that he will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he will have his Lakers jersey retired, no doubt about it," Buss stated firmly.
That distinction is key. Buss was cautious on the statue question but completely clear about the jersey. For the Lakers, Hall of Fame induction is the benchmark—and James is one of the easiest Hall of Fame calls in basketball history. His jersey retirement feels inevitable, even if the statue conversation will have to wait.
