Jalen Duren's 20-point performance powered the Detroit Pistons to a decisive 118-100 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night. The win officially locked the Hornets into the play-in tournament, while the Pistons continued their dominant march toward the postseason.
Despite already securing the Eastern Conference's top seed, Detroit showed no signs of letting up, playing its regular starters and showcasing its depth. Cade Cunningham added 14 points, while Ronald Holland II and Ausar Thompson chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Duren was a force on the boards as well, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. The Pistons are now just one win away from their first 60-win season in two decades.
The game was fiercely competitive for three quarters, featuring 11 lead changes and 13 ties. Charlotte's LaMelo Ball put up a strong fight with 27 points and eight assists, supported by Brandon Miller's 22 points. However, the Pistons seized control late in the third quarter. After the score was knotted at 87, Detroit unleashed a devastating 24-8 run, blowing the game open and deflating the sellout crowd of 19,623 at Charlotte's home finale.
The intensity was palpable from the opening tip, highlighted by a brief skirmish less than two minutes into the game. After Miller dunked and landed on Duncan Robinson (who scored 19 points), Robinson shoved him away, resulting in double technical fouls and setting the tone for a physical, high-stakes contest.
