Lionel Messi once again proved why he's the GOAT, scoring a beauty and setting up another for Inter Miami against Orlando City on Saturday night. But even his magic couldn't save the team from an epic second-half collapse that turned a dream start into a nightmare defeat.
The Herons came flying out of the gates, with Ian Fray heading home Telasco Segovia's cross to open the scoring early. Messi then turned provider, threading a perfect ball to Segovia for an easy finish in the 25th minute. Just to rub it in, the Argentine maestro made it 3-0 before the half-hour mark, cutting onto his left foot and curling a trademark shot into the bottom corner.
At that point, the home fans at the new stadium were already celebrating. Martin Ojeda pulled one back for Orlando, but Miami looked in complete control heading into halftime.
Then the wheels came off.
Orlando came out transformed after the break, with Ojeda bagging his second with a brilliant finish in the 68th minute. The visitors kept pushing, and their persistence paid off when Maxi Falcon conceded a penalty with 10 minutes left. Ojeda stepped up to complete his hat trick from the spot.
Just when it looked like Miami might salvage a point, disaster struck in the third minute of stoppage time. Tyrese Spicer sliced through the defense to slot past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, sealing an embarrassing 4-3 defeat.
The loss means Guillermo Hoyos' side still hasn't tasted victory at their new home stadium. They're stuck in third place in the MLS Eastern Conference, and questions are starting to mount about their ability to close out games.
Messi and Co. will look to bounce back next Saturday when they hit the road to face Toronto. If they want to stay in the title race, they'll need to figure out how to protect a lead—fast.
