The New York Islanders are shaking up their coaching staff, and it's a move that brings both experience and a winning track record to the bench. On May 5, the team officially announced the promotion of Rocky Thompson to Assistant Coach, elevating him from his role as Head Coach of their American Hockey League affiliate in Bridgeport.
Thompson, 48, is no stranger to success. In his single season with the Bridgeport Islanders, he engineered a remarkable turnaround, guiding the team back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2021-22 season with a solid 34-30-8 record. That performance earned him this well-deserved step up the ladder, marking a homegrown promotion from within the organization.
Before his stint in Bridgeport, Thompson spent three seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Philadelphia Flyers, honing his skills at the NHL level. But his coaching journey runs even deeper. He served as an Associate Coach for the San Jose Sharks under Bob Boughner during the 2020-21 season—a reunion that adds an intriguing layer, as Boughner now works alongside him as an Assistant Coach on the Islanders' staff.
Thompson's head coaching resume is impressive. He spent three seasons (2017-2020) at the helm of the Chicago Wolves, the Vegas Golden Knights' AHL club, where he compiled a stellar 113-71-29 record over 213 regular-season games. The highlight came in 2018-19, when he led the Wolves to a 44-22-10 record and a memorable run to the Calder Cup Finals.
His coaching pedigree extends to the junior ranks as well. Thompson was Head Coach of the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League for two seasons (2015-2017), posting an 81-40-15 record and capturing a Memorial Cup Championship in 2017—a testament to his ability to build championship-caliber teams.
As a player, Thompson was a former third-round draft pick who suited up for 25 NHL games with the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers. Over his professional career, which included 566 games primarily in the AHL, he recorded 69 points (17 goals, 52 assists) and a staggering 1,919 penalty minutes—a statistic that speaks to his gritty, hard-nosed playing style that he now brings to the coaching side.
For Islanders fans, this promotion signals a commitment to developing talent from within and adding a coach with a proven ability to inspire playoff runs. Keep an eye on Thompson as he brings his championship experience to the NHL bench—this could be a move that pays dividends for years to come.
