Iowa State Cyclones wrestling's Anthony Echemendia plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

In a significant roster development for the Iowa State Cyclones wrestling program, two-time NCAA All-American Anthony Echemendia has confirmed his intention to enter the transfer portal. The news, first reported by Cyclone Fanatic, marks a notable shift in the team's middleweight dynamics as they prepare for the 2025-26 season.

Echemendia's journey with the Cyclones was marked by both high achievement and challenging setbacks. After joining the team for the 2023-24 season and securing a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, his following campaign was derailed by an ankle injury. He battled back to earn a sixth-place finish in 2026, though his tournament run ended early due to a medical forfeit from an arm injury.

While his departure creates a vacancy, Iowa State is no stranger to navigating a crowded middleweight room. The lineup between 141 and 157 pounds has been a complex puzzle for the coaching staff. Fortunately, the Cyclones have depth to work with. The return of the Frost twins, Evan and Jacob, alongside Paniro Johnson, provides multiple experienced options to fill the gap. Jacob Frost has shown versatility at 141 and 149, while Johnson has competed at both 149 and 157.

Echemendia becomes the sixth confirmed Cyclone to enter the portal this cycle, joining a list that includes Christian Castillo and Manny Rojas, among others. These departures, coupled with graduations, mean Head Coach Kevin Dresser and his staff have work ahead to solidify the full roster. For fans following the team's evolution, the coming weeks will be crucial as the coaching staff looks to rebuild and rebalance their lineup for another run at the national podium.
