The Indiana Fever are taking a cautious approach with forward Monique Billings as she works her way back from a right ankle injury. Head coach Stephanie White confirmed that Billings did not practice on Monday, leaving her status for the season opener uncertain.
"The only update is that she didn't practice today," White said. "We're going to keep evaluating it day by day, but knowing we have the full week, we'll give her an opportunity to make sure that she's as close to 100% as possible before we throw her out there."
Billings suffered the injury during the Fever's preseason finale against the Nigerian National Team on Saturday. The incident occurred in the first quarter when she landed on an opponent's foot while battling for a rebound. Medical staff quickly ruled her out for the remainder of the contest.
The former UCLA Bruin signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract with Indiana in free agency and is projected to start at power forward this season. If she's unable to go on game day, backup Myisha Hines-Allen is expected to see the bulk of the minutes at that position.
The Fever kick off their 2026 WNBA regular season on May 9 against the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for noon CT, with national coverage on ABC. For now, the team is taking it day by day, prioritizing Billings' long-term health over rushing her back into action.
