The Indian cricket team's support staff is set for a significant shake-up, with a specialist spin-bowling coach poised to join the ranks. Former India spinner Sairaj Bahutule is expected to take on the role for a two-year term, bringing a wealth of experience to the dressing room. The 53-year-old leg-spinner, who is currently with Punjab Kings in the IPL, will reportedly step down from his franchise duties after the 2026 season to focus on his new national responsibilities.
This move comes as Team India looks to sharpen its spin attack under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Bahutule's appointment is slated to kick off with the home series against Afghanistan in June, giving him an immediate opportunity to work with the squad. The current coaching setup already includes batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, fast-bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, making Bahutule a key addition to round out the team.
Bahutule's credentials are impressive. While his international playing career—two Tests and eight ODIs between 1997 and 2003—yielded just five wickets, his first-class record tells a different story. In 188 matches, the former Mumbai allrounder snared a staggering 630 wickets at an average of 26.00, while also chipping in with over 6,000 runs. It's this deep well of experience that has made him a sought-after coach.
His coaching journey is extensive. Bahutule has served as India's bowling coach or spin consultant on around 10 tours, working under former head coaches Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. Notably, he was the head coach for India's white-ball tour to South Africa in November 2024 and led the India Emerging team in Oman. He also played a key role during the home Test series against Australia in 2022-23, acting as a spin consultant at Dravid's request. His time at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru from 2021 to 2024 further solidified his reputation for nurturing young talent, and he has previously worked with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
For fans and players alike, Bahutule's appointment signals a renewed focus on India's spin department. His blend of playing experience and coaching acumen could be just what the team needs to dominate on turning tracks at home and abroad.
