The Houston Rockets find themselves in a must-win scenario as they face off against the Los Angeles Lakers in a pivotal Game 6 of the NBA Playoffs. With their season hanging in the balance, Head Coach Ime Udoka is making a bold strategic shift—placing his trust in two young guards to lead the charge.
While All-Star big man Alperen Sengun will naturally draw defensive attention, Udoka has singled out Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard as the keys to unlocking the Rockets' offense. "When I’ve got my arms around Amen and Reed, I’m telling them, ‘This is the point in the game where you guys take over. You guys are the guards. Be demonstrative, get the ball and dictate whatever we’re getting,'" Udoka revealed, via Sam Amick of The Athletic.
The decision comes as no surprise. Throughout the playoffs, Houston has struggled with ballhandling and play execution, posting a turnover percentage of 11.3% that, while not the worst in the league, has been a persistent thorn in their side. Against a veteran Lakers squad led by LeBron James and supported by reliable options like Deandre Ayton and Luke Kennard, every possession counts.
Fortunately, both Sheppard and Thompson have shown significant growth in their ballhandling during this postseason run. In their Game 5 victory over the Lakers, the duo proved they could run the offense effectively. Sheppard logged 35 minutes as the team's primary engine, dishing out six assists while committing just one turnover. Thompson, meanwhile, played a grueling 45 minutes, adding four assists despite three giveaways. Sengun led the team with eight assists, but the backcourt's steady hands were crucial.
Udoka's strategy is clear: by empowering Sheppard and Thompson to take control of the offense, he can relieve some of the creative burden on Sengun, allowing the Rockets to flow more freely. For a team fighting to extend their playoff lives, this trust in youth might just be the spark they need to push past the Lakers.
