Can the Illini nab their big fish?

The Illinois coaching staff is pulling out all the stops in their pursuit of a major offseason prize. Earlier this week, they flew to Los Angeles for a crucial in-person meeting with top transfer target John Blackwell, the former Wisconsin guard who is one of the most coveted players in the portal.

This recruitment has a distinct family feel for the Illini. Blackwell’s father, Glynn, played at Illinois from 1984-88 and was even in attendance at the Final Four in Indianapolis, underscoring the deep existing connection. Illinois has been aggressively recruiting Blackwell since he entered the portal, and they have a compelling pitch: head coach Brad Underwood has developed four NBA guards since 2021, presenting a clear pathway for Blackwell's professional aspirations.

The competition, however, is fierce. Blackwell has narrowed his list to a powerhouse group of six: Illinois, Duke, Alabama, Arizona, Louisville, and UCLA. He recently took an official visit to UCLA, which could shake up a race many believe is currently led by Duke and Illinois. Blackwell is expected to explore the NBA Draft process but aims to make his college decision by May 4th.

Landing Blackwell would be a program-defining move. Ranked as high as the No. 3 overall transfer by 247Sports, he averaged 19.1 points per game last season and is a dynamic 6-foot-4 guard known for his sharpshooting and tenacious defense. Adding him to a roster that already includes Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks would give Illinois one of the nation's most formidable backcourts and instantly cement them as a preseason favorite for the 2026 national championship.
