The Huddersfield Giants have turned to a familiar face to lead them out of troubled waters, appointing former player Jim Lenihan as their new head coach following the dismissal of Luke Robinson.
Currently languishing at the bottom of the Super League table, the Giants have been without a permanent head coach since Robinson was sacked on 22 March. The team has managed just two wins from their opening 10 matches, leaving them two points adrift of safety and desperately in need of a turnaround.
Lenihan brings a mix of experience and nostalgia to the role. The former Gold Coast Titans assistant coach previously pulled on the Giants jersey back in 1999, making 21 appearances for the club. His return to Huddersfield marks a full-circle moment, with the club hoping his vision can reignite their fortunes.
"The Huddersfield Giants received some outstanding applications from candidates, but it was Lenihan's vision for the club, which aligned with the club's," a statement confirmed, highlighting the strategic fit that won him the job.
Robinson's tenure was a rocky one from the start. He took over from Ian Watson in 2024 and endured a brutal nine-match losing streak before finally securing a narrow victory against Hull FC at Magic Weekend last May. Hampered by financial constraints, he managed to steer the club to 10th place in the final Super League standings last year, but the board decided a change was needed.
In the interim, Liam Finn stepped up and delivered a shock win at Wigan in his first game, followed by another victory at newly promoted York. However, the Giants have since lost three consecutive matches, with injuries also taking a heavy toll on their campaign.
Now, all eyes are on Lenihan as he looks to steady the ship and bring some much-needed momentum back to the John Smith's Stadium. For fans and players alike, it's a fresh start—and a chance to write a new chapter in Huddersfield's storied history.
