Henry Davis may be known for his intense focus and relentless work ethic, but Friday night at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates catcher had every reason to let a smile break through.
In a commanding 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that snapped a five-game losing streak, Davis delivered a performance worth celebrating. The ultra-competitive backstop—renowned as one of the hardest workers in the clubhouse—finally saw his dedication pay off in a big way.
Davis launched his first two home runs of the season, driving in a career-high three runs and reaching base safely three times. It was the kind of night that reminds everyone why baseball can be so rewarding.
"Felt really good," Davis said after the game. "I've hit homers in the past with the swing not right, but seeing my barrel work through the middle of the field—I've been doing it in batting practice for a while. Old, bad habits have been taking over in the game. To see it happen, to take a fastball to the middle of the field really felt good."
The breakout started in the bottom of the fourth inning when Davis crushed a solo shot to center field off Reds starter Brady Singer, extending Pittsburgh's lead to 4-0. It marked his first home run since the final series of the 2025 season in Atlanta.
But Davis wasn't done. In the following inning, he hammered a two-run blast down the left-field line off reliever Zach Maxwell, notching his first multi-homer game since July 21, 2023—when he went deep twice against Shohei Ohtani, then with the Angels, in Anaheim.
"I don't know, but I like it," Pirates manager Don Kelly said with a grin when asked what sparked Davis's explosion. "He had great at-bats, stayed through the middle."
Coming into the game with a .447 OPS, Davis boosted that mark to .582 in one night—a reminder that even the hardest grinders need a moment to shine. For Pirates fans, seeing that rare smile on Davis's face might be the best sign yet that better days are ahead.
