The New England Patriots have found a diamond in the rough in quarterback Behren Morton, and he's making the most of his early opportunity with the team. Selected in the seventh round of this year's NFL Draft with the 234th overall pick, the former Texas Tech signal-caller is already turning heads at rookie minicamp—and he's doing it while feeling healthier than he has in years.

When the Patriots scouted Morton ahead of the draft, one quality stood out above all others. "The toughness," said Eliot Wolf, the team's executive vice president of player personnel. "He played through a lot of stuff. He's been beat up, but he's played through a lot of stuff." That resilience is exactly what you want in a quarterback who can handle the grind of an NFL season.

Morton's college career was a battle against injuries. He suffered a ligament tear in his right throwing shoulder and still played through the pain during the 2023 and 2024 seasons before finally undergoing surgery last offseason. Then, as a senior, a hairline fracture in his right leg forced him to miss two games. But now, with a fresh start in New England, Morton is feeling like a new man. "Body's great," he said. "This is the healthiest I've been in a really long time. Shoulder hasn't been this good since high school."

That renewed health was on full display during rookie minicamp in Foxboro. As the only player wearing the Patriots' red non-contact quarterback jersey, Morton looked sharp and confident. He completed all 12 of his passes during full-team periods and operated the offense smoothly on just his second day of practice. "A lot of reps, which is really beneficial right now," Morton explained. "And then, when we start Monday, reps will go down. But learning from watching Tom Brady and the guys that have played in this offense, it's really cool to see the film that I get to watch. A lot of cool stuff in this offense, and I'm really excited to learn it."

Morton joins a depth chart that features starter Drake Maye and backup Tommy DeVito, so he understands his role as a third-string developmental quarterback. That makes maximizing every opportunity—like rookie minicamp—absolutely critical. He's already putting in extra work with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant, soaking up as much knowledge as possible. "It's a great opportunity to be here, and I think that I'm trying to maximize my days here," Morton said. "So as much information as I can retain, I want to retain as much as I can."

For a seventh-round pick, early impressions matter. And Behren Morton is making sure his count. With his health back and his head in the playbook, this young quarterback is giving Patriots fans plenty of reason to watch the depth chart closely.
