The Vegas Golden Knights will be without their captain for a pivotal Game 4 against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night, as Mark Stone sits out with an undisclosed injury. Head coach John Tortorella confirmed that veteran forward Brandon Saad will step into the lineup to fill the void left by Stone, who was injured during the first period of Friday's Game 3.
Stone's injury occurred while he was chasing down a puck in the opening frame of Vegas's commanding 6-2 victory. Despite attempting to return to the ice, the captain was unable to continue after appearing to hurt his lower body. The Golden Knights currently hold a 2-1 series lead in this second-round playoff matchup.
Before his early exit, Stone managed to log a first-period assist on Shea Theodore's opening goal, adding to his impressive postseason tally of three goals and four assists across nine games. The 33-year-old has been nothing short of spectacular this season, racking up 73 points in 60 regular-season games. A two-way force, Stone has been the heart and soul of the franchise since joining late in the 2018-19 season, becoming the first captain in club history and famously leading Vegas to the 2023 Stanley Cup championship with a hat trick in the clinching game.
Enter Brandon Saad, who will make his postseason debut after recording nine points in 49 regular-season games with the Golden Knights. The well-traveled forward brings valuable playoff experience, having suited up for eight postseason contests with Vegas last spring. "Playoff hockey is the best time of the year, so I'm excited to get in and help the team win," Saad told reporters during the pregame skate.
Tortorella opted for Saad over Reilly Smith, who played all six games of Vegas's first-round series victory against Utah but has been a healthy scratch throughout the Anaheim series. With Stone's absence, the Golden Knights will need Saad to step up and bring his veteran presence as they look to take a commanding 3-1 series lead on home ice.
