In the world of high school softball, few names carry the weight of Carol Mitchell. For over three decades, the Gibbs High School head coach has been at the helm of the Lady Eagles, building a legacy that now includes a national honor. Mitchell was recently named the NFHS National Coach of the Year, making her one of just 24 coaches across the country to receive the prestigious award.
Mitchell's resume speaks for itself. As the winningest coach in TSSAA softball history, she has amassed over 1,000 victories and seven state championships. Her journey began in 1993, and she has never taken the role for granted. "I went to Gibbs High School, and I grew up in this community," Mitchell said. "It means everything. That's what I try to instill in the girls. We represent our community, so go out and give it your all. Be proud of your community."
Before a recent game against Maryville, Mitchell was recognized by district and school leaders, along with State Representative Dave Wright, for earning the national honor. True to her team-first mentality, Mitchell deflected the praise. "I'm just really honored that out of all the coaches across the nation, that I was the one chosen," she said. "It's really not me; it's really all the coaches and players that were before me that have kind of brought this moment to happen. I'm grateful and humbled at the same time."
For fans of the game, Mitchell's achievement is a testament to the power of dedication and community. Whether you're a player, coach, or supporter, her story reminds us that greatness is built on teamwork and passion. So, the next time you step onto the field or cheer from the stands, remember the Lady Eagles and the coach who leads with heart.
