The Big Ten has ruled college football for three consecutive seasons, and the SEC—once the undisputed king of the sport—is still trying to figure out how to respond. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart recently weighed in on the shift, offering a candid mix of praise and perspective.

For nearly two decades, the SEC was the gold standard. It all started with Florida's stunning upset of No. 1 Ohio State in the 2006 BCS National Championship, and over the next 17 title games, the SEC won 13 of them. "S-E-C" chants echoed across the South as the rest of the country played catch-up.

But the landscape changed with the arrival of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules. As Fox Sports' Joel Klatt famously noted, once everyone could legally pay players, the playing field leveled. Before NIL, several SEC programs had been penalized for improper benefits, but the new rules made it fair game for all. Since Georgia last hoisted the national trophy in 2022, the Big Ten has won three straight championships, flipping the script on conference supremacy.

Smart didn't shy away from the question when asked why the Big Ten has surged ahead. He started with a dose of respect. "I don't know, I can't figure out what it is. I just think they have a more competitive conference," Smart said. "At the top of their conference, there's more good teams. It used to be Ohio State was good. Well, Michigan was really good with (Jim) Harbaugh, had a great team. Indiana's good. Like, now they've got Oregon. They've got a draw. They have the ability to attract good players."

But the Georgia coach also pointed to NIL as a factor that has spread talent more evenly across the country. "Now NIL has a factor too, for sure, but so does Miami. So does Florida. I mean, people have money. More people have money. So I think the talent is spread out thin, whereas before in the SEC, it was a magnet," Smart explained.

For fans and athletes alike, this shift means the college football hierarchy is more unpredictable than ever—and that's exactly what makes the game exciting. As the balance of power continues to evolve, one thing is clear: staying on top requires more than just tradition. It takes adaptability, strategy, and the right gear to match the intensity of today's game.
