It was a bittersweet Sunday at Hammons Field as the Missouri State Bears honored 11 seniors before their series finale against Jacksonville State, but the Gamecocks had other plans. In a decisive 11-4 victory, Jax State spoiled the Senior Day festivities and clinched a critical series win on the road.
The Gamecocks came out swinging, erupting for four runs in the top of the second inning to seize control early. The big blow came off the bat of Sam Richardson, who launched a three-run homer that put Missouri State in a hole they could never climb out of.
The Bears showed some fight in the bottom half of the inning, with Caden Bogenpohl answering with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-2. But that was as close as Missouri State would get. The Gamecocks continued to pile on, scoring seven more runs between the fourth and eighth innings, while the Bears managed just two more runs of their own.
For the second straight game, Missouri State's pitching staff surrendered double-digit runs, marking a troubling trend for a team that has now lost seven of its last eight contests. The series loss was their first at home this spring, adding another layer of disappointment to an already frustrating stretch.
Bears head coach Joey Hawkins didn't mince words when asked about his team's recent struggles. "Yeah, not great, uninspiring, just chasing ourselves all game," Hawkins said. "That's a really hard brand to play. Obviously, I'll take ownership, but we have to take ownership up and down the coaching staff, and the roster. If it's a team effort when you win, it better be when you lose, and we gotta look ourselves in the mirror right now because the effort isn't great."
With the season hitting a critical juncture, Missouri State will need to regroup quickly if they hope to turn things around. For now, the Gamecocks walk away with a hard-fought series victory and a Senior Day memory the Bears would rather forget.
